The Toledo Institute for Development and Environment (TIDE) is a subnational non-governmental organization established in 1997 that is registered with the Belizean Government and headquartered in Punta Gorda. The principal purpose of the organization is “to foster community participation in resource management and sustainable use of ecosystems within the Maya Mountain Marine Corridor of southern Belize for the benefit of present and future generations.” TIDE adheres to this purpose through myriad of projects, programs and activities both marine and terrestrial based. It currently runs an award winning Freshwater Cup, and programs for community stewards, community researchers and junior community stewards programs, including summer camps to build environmental awareness. It has also worked with communities adjacent to its protected areas to develop sustainable businesses such as community fly-fishing, birding, and eco-tourism hospitality services, chicken rearing businesses, and the Rio Grande Fishing Cooperative. Sustainable eco-tourism is also a priority, thus in 1999, TIDE established its subsidiary, TIDE Tours, to promote responsible tourism, offer employment opportunities and generate revenue through Ridge to Reef Expeditions for TIDE’s Education and Outreach program.
